Leaving the UAE? Checklist for selling your car

What to do, and in which order, when you sell your car before leaving the UAE: fines, bank NOC, RTA transfer, insurance, Salik and export.

Updated 11 Sep 2026

Selling your car before you leave the UAE goes smoothly when you do things in the right order. Start early: most of the steps depend on each other.

The checklist

  1. Clear all fines. Outstanding traffic fines must be paid before the ownership transfer can go through.
  2. Settle the loan and get the bank NOC. If the car is financed, settle the loan and get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the bank. Without it the transfer cannot be done.
  3. Transfer ownership at RTA. Complete the transfer with the buyer at a typing centre or in the RTA app. The buyer needs their own insurance and a UAE driving licence. See How to transfer vehicle ownership in Dubai for the fees and steps.
  4. Cancel your insurance. Once the car is no longer yours, cancel your policy. Ask your insurer whether you get anything back for the unused period (to be verified per insurer).
  5. Sort out the Salik tag. The Salik toll tag is linked to the car. Deal with the tag and your Salik account before you leave (check the current process with Salik).
  6. Exporting instead? Deregistration and export certificate. If the car leaves the UAE with you instead of being sold here, it is deregistered and needs an export certificate (to be verified with RTA).
